UWS Shuts Out Finlandia

After a strong performance in their previous match with Bethany Lutheran, the UW-Superior women’s soccer team hoped to keep the momentum going when they took on Finlandia Tuesday afternoon.

The Yellowjackets did just that, scoring twice in less than a minute to take down the Lions 2-0 in their non-conference matchup in Houghton, Mich.

Despite controlling a first-half in which they outshot Finlandia 12-6, UW-Superior (1-4-1) headed to halftime locked in a scoreless draw as Lions goal tender Adrianna Osuna made seven saves in the opening 45 minutes.

The Yellowjackets increased the pressure in the second half, holding a 24-3 edge in shots after the intermission.

All UW-Superior’s pressure paid off at 72:58 as senior captain Rachel Rossiter (Twig, Minn./Proctor) scored her second goal of the season on assists from Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) and Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) to give the Yellowjackets a 1-0 lead.

The Yellowjackets doubled their lead just 37 seconds later when Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) netted her second tally of the year on a helper from Marcelius at 73:35, giving UW-Superior a 2-0 cushion with just 16:25 remaining in regulation.

From there, UW-Superior net minder Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) shut the door with six saves to pick up her first career shut-out.

Adams paced the Yellowjackets offensively with 12 of UW-Superior’s 36 total shots for the afternoon. Coombs and Rachel Wallace (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia) each had six shots for the Yellowjackets as well.

Finlandia (2-2) was led by Annalissa Arthuer and Alena Fiala, who each had three shots for the afternoon.

Osuna stopped 19 of 21 shots in taking the loss for the Lions.

The Yellowjackets continue their road trip when they head to Lakeland for a non-conference tilt on Saturday.  Opening kickoff against the Muskies is scheduled for 3 p.m
