Saints Volleyball Snaps Losing Streak

OSHKOSH, Wis. (csssaints.com) – St. Scholastica volleyball split its first two matches in the Pizza Hut Classic hosted by the University Wisconsin-Oshkosh Friday night. The Saints lost the first match 3-1 to Dominican University (Ill.) and defeated Maranatha Baptist University (Wis.) 3-0.

St. Scholastica (2-6) extended its losing streak to five straight games following a 3-1 defeat to Dominican (4-4) in the team’s opening match. CSS took the first set 25-20 before dropping three straight 25-22, 25-19 and 27-25 lowering its season record to 2-6-0.

Jen Hortness (Little Falls, Minn./Little Falls HS) led the Saints with 11 kills followed by Kortney Morrin (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg HS (Northern State)) with eight. Erika Birkeland (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake HS) and Kirsten Eaton (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata HS) were tops in assists recording 19 and 18 respectively. Danielle Benusa (Shakopee, Minn./Shakopee HS) added 19 digs.

Maddi Zanoni and Caitlen Foote led the Dominican with 11 kills apiece. Christina Wilson, a 2013 Northern Athletic Collegiate Conference All-American, added 46 assists for the Stars.

CSS 3, Maranatha Baptist 0
The Saints (3-6) snapped a six-game losing streak in strong fashion taking Maranatha Baptist (10-1) in three straight sets 25-23, 25-20 and 25-23.

Morrin recorded a team-high 18 kill with Hortness adding 12 of her own for St. Scholastica. Birkeland and Eaton each contributed 17 assists. Birkeland was also tops in digs with 11 followed by Morrin with 10. Horton posted two blocks for CSS.

Alison Renz added 11 kills to go along with three blocks for the Sabercats and Emily Thompson had a team-best 13 assists.

St. Scholastica continues play in the Pizza Hut Classic on Saturday against Finlandia University (Mich.) at 10 a.m. followed by a 2 p.m. contest against Lawrence University (Wis.).
