Fans attending Cloquet’s 41-0 victory over Greenway/Nashwauk-Keewatin in high school football on Friday night had a pretty special feeling everytime running back Kyle Klatt touched the ball. Klatt scored three times in the first half, but it was his impressive average of 30.5 yards per carry that had fans on the edge of their seats.

The Lumberjacks parlayed three turnovers, and dominating line play on both sides of the ball into the easy victory over the Titans. Cloquet’s first score came with 7:31 remaining in the first quarter when he took a hand off from quarterback Nate Weets and then followed his opening on a trap play to run 43 yards for a score making it 7-0 after the extra point kick by Nick Niemi. Cloquet’s second touchdown of the game came with 3:30 remaining in the first quarter when Weets found his big tight end, Niemi, on the right flat and Niemi did the rest by rumbling 16-yards to pay dirt making it 14-0 after Niemi also booted the extra point.

Just 27 seconds after Niemi’s touchdown the Jacks scored again after intercepting the ball on a Titans pass the Jacks took over at the GNK 24 yard line and one play later it was Klatt dashing 24 yards for his second score of the game as Cloquet went up 21-0 after Niemi knocked through the extra point kick and that’s how the first quarter ended.

Just seven seconds into the second quarter the Lumberjacks got another big play, this time from Weets and Brady Obeidzinski as they hooked up on a 17-yard pass and catch for a score making it 28-0 after Niemi’s extra point kick.

The Lumberjacks added two more scores before halftime when Klatt bolted free from the 44-yard line for his third touchdown and Weets then found Zach Gerlach open for a 53-yard touchdown pass with 5:39 remaining till halftime making it 41-0 at the break.

Cloquet played a plethora of players in the second half and at times they were able to get to their third player on their depth chart at certain positions in the second half as they did their best to empty the bench and get playing time for as many players as possible.

The win puts the Jacks at 3-0 on the season and 2-0 in the Sea Range Conference, while the Titans dropped to 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the conference.

Cloquet ended up with 364 yards in total offense and average 9.1 yards per play in the game.
