NSO-NEWS RELEASE

Elmhurst 2, Superior 0

After losing several key members of their 2013 WIAC Conference title team, the UW-Superior men’s soccer team knew it would likely take some time to come together in 2014.

The new-look Yellowjackets opened their season against a difficult challenge in the Elmhurst College Bluejays.  And unfortunately for UW-Superior, the Bluejays proved to be too tough, scoring two first half goals on the way to a 2-0 shutout in the first game of a two-game weekend set for UW-Superior.

Elmhurst, which finished 11-4-3 in 2013, opened the scoring at 18:50 when Brett Stiffler tallied on assists from Alec Gnass and Jeff Kading for a 1-0 lead.

The Bluejays doubled their lead late in the first half as Mike Emig scored on a second assist from Kading for a 2-0 edge after the opening stanza.

From there, Elmhurst out-shot the Yellowjackets 8-3 in the second half and 14-5 for the game to pick up the shutout victory.

Matt Elder (New Hope, Minn./Robbinsdale Armstrong) took the loss in goal for UW-Superior, making three saves in the contest.

Yellowjacket shots came from Gio Rodriguez (Rancho Cucamonga, Calif./Los Osos), Dan Baga (Bloomington, Minn./Jefferson), John Little (Plymouth, Minn./Wayzata), Brian Grand (North Branch, Minn./North Branch) and Chase Carey (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove).

UW-Superior finishes up the weekend by taking on Dubuque Saturday afternoon.  Opening kick against the Spartans is scheduled for 4 p.m.
