NSO-NEWS RELEASE

Augsburg 8, Superior 0

After an offseason of change, the UW-Superior women’s soccer team finally took the field for the first time under new coach Morgan McLean Friday evening.

Unfortunately for the Yellowjackets, a deep and experienced Augsburg squad was ready for the challenge.  And the Auggies proved why they only dropped three games a year ago while finishing fifth in the highly competitive Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.

Led by two goals each from Marie Fitzgerald and Kaitlyn Terrio, the Auggies scored five first half goals on the way to posting an 8-0 shutout victory over UW-Superior in Minneapolis.

Augsburg outshot the Yellowjackets 31-4 for the game, forcing UW-Superior freshman net minder Bailey Henderson (Oakdale, Minn./North St. Paul) to make nine saves in her collegiate debut.  Katelyn Adams (Two Harbors, Minn./Two Harbors) took two of the Yellowjackets’ four shots for the game while Shelby Coombs (Anaheim, Calif./Magnolia ) and Lily Marcelius (Minnetonka, Minn./Hopkins) had UW-Superior’s other attempts at goal.

The Auggies got off to a fast start, getting goals from Taylor Kuramoto and Carter Denison in the opening 4:36 for a quick 2-0 lead.

Fitzgerald followed up by adding her two tallies at 14:59 and 20:43 before Morgan Kenny’s goal at 28:03 made it 5-0 heading into the intermission.

From there, Terrio scored at 67:46 and 83:00 while Ashley Waalen also tallied at 82:05 in the 8-0 final.

The Yellowjackets open their home schedule on Wednesday when they host Martin Luther in a non-conference affair.  Opening kick is scheduled for 4 p.m.
