NSO-NEWS RELEASE

The University of Wisconsin-Superior Yellowjackets volleyball team took the court for the first time in 2014 on Friday night in Beloit, Wis. Their night included two matches, one against Rockford University and one against Milwaukee School of Engineering.

Yellowjackets 3, Rockford 0

The Yellowjackets smashed Rockford University in the first match, winning the best-of-five series, 3-0. They outscored Rockford University 75-33 in the games the two teams played. Stephanie Bandelin (Esko, Minn./Esko) was the only Yellowjacket to reach double digits in kills, finishing with 10. Keely Deadrick (Esko, Minn./Esko) led the way with 18 assists and Chelsey Walerius (New Prague, Minn./Tri-City United) had 14 digs to lead the team, respectively.

Milwaukee School of Engineering 3, Yellowjackets 2

In their second match of the night, the Yellowjackets found themselves in a tight battle the whole way with MSOE. These two teams proved that beating a team three times in a row is tough. MSOE took the first two games of the match, with the Yellowjackets hardly putting up a fight in the first game, losing 9-25. However, the Yellowjackets started to fight back, winning the third game of the match, 25-21. They weren’t done, though, as they won the fourth game as well, 28-26. It all came down to the fifth and final game. MSOE held off the Yellowjackets, winning the game 15-9 and the match, 3-2. Highlights of the match were sophomore Walerius recording 17 digs and senior Deadrick recording a match-high 39 assists. Senior Vicki Vinokur (Maple Grove, Minn./Maple Grove) had 12 kills and Bandelin had 11 kills. MSOE was led by Sarabeth Haworth had 34 kills and Aleah Quast with 20 digs. Haworth also had 21 kills to lead MSOE.

Yellowjackets 3, Alverno 0

On Saturday, the Yellowjackets took down Alverno College by sweeping the Inferno 3-0 in their first match of the day. Bandelin led the team with 18 kills, accounting for nearly half of the Yellowjacket kills in the match and finished with an attack percentage of .457. As a team the Yellowjackets enjoyed a .303 attack percentage.

Walerius was solid once again defensively with 12 digs, and Deadrick led the way with 31 assists as the Yellowjackets won by scores of 25-22, 25-17, and 25-22.

Yellowjackets 3, Marian 1

In the tournament finale the Yellowjackets needed four sets but ultimately picked up the 3-1 win, taking down Marian University by scores of 25-23, 19-25, 29-27, 25-14.

Bandelin again led the charge offensively for the Yellowjackets, racking up 18 kills for the second time on the day. Bandelin had 57 kills on the weekend. Vinokur added in 12 kills to help the Yellowjackets get off to a 3-1 start.

Deadrick again finished with 38 assists, the third time on the weekend she eclipsed the 30-assist mark. Defensively it was another strong match for Walerius, who had a team-best 13 digs.

The all-tournament team will be announced later.
