SAN ANTONIO, Texas (csssaints.com) – The St. Scholastica men’s soccer team battled No. 5 Trinity University to a 3-1 loss in sweltering heat on Friday to open the season.

Both teams would have chances early in the game with the pitch slightly tilted toward Trinity. The Tigers ultimately would draw a penalty after a rebound and convert the penalty kick in the 11th minute to make it 1-0.

It would be 1-0 Trinity after the first half of play. The Tigers out-shot the Saints 13-5 in the half, but corner kicks were even at 3-3.

The Saints would hit the crossbar early in the second half and moments later Brent Mandelkorn found space on the right side of the CSS defense and made it 2-0 Trinity. Less than two minutes later Dylan Blumberg buried a header off of a corner kick to extend the lead to 3-0.

The Saints drew a penalty 21 seconds later and Andrew Jenkins (Cardiff, Wales/Whitchurch HS) converted the penalty kick to make it 3-1. CSS would see plenty of chance late and out-shot the Tigers 9-8 in the second half, but fell 3-1.

Freshman goalkeeper Jacob Ballheimer (Gerrards Cross, England/Chalfonts Community College) made six saves in his first collegiate start. Matt Cardone had four saves in the win for the Tigers.

The Saints will face Southwestern University (Texas) tomorrow night at 8 p.m. down at Trinity. You can watch the game live at the following link: http://portal.stretchinternet.com/trinitytigers/
