Slam Dunks and 3-Pointers Prevail in Boys All-Star Game

DULUTH – Wednesday night at Duluth Denfeld several of the best players from Northern Minnesota put on a exhibition of outstanding three-point shooting and some rim rattling slam dunks as the Area Stars down the Duluth Stars 106-96. It was the Duluth Area Stars coached by Scott Hendricks of Moose Lake – Willow River and the Area Stars coached by Chuck Isaacs of Deer River.


The game featured several local standouts, Cloquet’s Chad Calcaterra and RaRa Jones, Joey Bohaty & Nate Zuk from Moose Lake-Willow River, Erick Johnson from Barnum, and Tyler Burgraff from Cromwell.


Cloquet’s Chad Calcaterra set the tempo for the night during the slam dunk contest prior to the game as he posted a score of 40 in the dunk competition. He was tied by Kenny Schofield of Cotton also received a perfect score of 40 when he dunked over a fan from the crowd. In the dunk off, Schofield again got a perfect dunk which brought the fans to their feet. But in the end it would be Game MVP Calcaterra leaving with the trophy. Dyami Starks of Duluth East won the 3 point contest as he nailed down 17 three pointers.

The Game featured seventeen 3 pointers, 8 slam dunks, and 6 missed dunks on open drives to the basket. The first half was a back and forth affair as both teams showcased their talents Joey Bohaty of Moose Lake -Willow River had 11 first half points for the Duluth Stars as they led two at 53-51. In the second half it was the Calcaterra and Jones show as they combined for thirty two second half points as the Area Stars came from behind and downed the Duluth Stars by ten.


Calcaterra led all scores as he finished with 34 points for the Area Stars. Keith Deegan of Deer River had 15, RaRa Jones and Steve Golobich each had 11, Kenny Schofield, Jacob Peterson, & Tony Clement all added 10, Tyler Erzr had 6 and Aaron Skoglund finished with 2.


The Duluth Stars were led by Dyami Starks who had 14, his Duluth East teammate Nick Toland with 13, Tyler Burgraff and Bohaty each added 11, Montclair Chapman & Nate Zuk had 10 apiece, Erik Johnson 9, Kyle Milbrath 6, Mike Carlson 5, and Charlie Haberman finished with 4.
